Why Did Fees Drop So Much?
Two upgrades are responsible. The Dencun upgrade in March 2024 introduced “blob” transactions that slashed Layer 2 costs by over 90%. Then the Fusaka upgrade in December 2025 introduced PeerDAS and more than doubled blob capacity, pushing even more activity off mainnet and onto rollups.
The combined result is that roughly 89% of all Ethereum ecosystem transactions now execute on Layer 2 networks, leaving mainnet uncongested.
Fees are not permanently low though. A major NFT mint, a DeFi exploit, or a sudden market crash can push gas above 20 gwei for a few hours, temporarily costing $2 to $5 per transfer. The fix is simple: check the gas tracker before you withdraw, or use a Layer 2 network where spikes barely register.
